A nine-year-old boy was rescued from his father's utility van in eastern France this week after being imprisoned there for nearly 18 months. Police discovered the child naked, malnourished, and unable to walk in the village of Hagenbach, near the Swiss and German borders.

Officers forced open the van Monday evening after a neighbor reported hearing sounds of a child coming from the vehicle. Inside, they found the boy in fetal position, covered by a blanket atop a pile of trash and near excrement, according to prosecutor Nicolas Heitz.

The father, 43, told investigators he locked his then seven-year-old son in the van in November 2024 to protect him from his partner, who allegedly wanted to send the child to a psychiatric hospital. No medical records indicate the boy had psychiatric problems before his disappearance, and he had maintained good grades in school.

The child survived on food and water his father brought twice daily. He used plastic bottles to urinate and garbage bags for defecation, having not showered since his imprisonment began. The prolonged confinement in a seated position left him unable to walk.
