Google has launched Meet support for Apple CarPlay, allowing drivers to join video conferences through their car's dashboard with audio-only functionality. The integration began rolling out globally on March 23, 2026, and is available by default for all Google Meet users with iPhones.

The CarPlay version strips away video capabilities and most interactive features to minimize driver distraction. Users can view their meeting schedule, join existing meetings with a single tap, and access basic controls for muting and ending calls. Video feeds, chat functions, hand-raising, polls, and Q&A features are disabled.

Audio automatically switches from the phone or earbuds to the car's speakers when connecting through CarPlay. The iPhone app enters an "On-the-Go" mode during vehicle use, with Google emphasizing a seamless transition between devices. When drivers disconnect from CarPlay, audio returns to the previously used output device.

"The feature makes joining meetings as simple as a single tap while keeping drivers focused on the road"
describing the safety-focused design

The implementation reflects safety-first design principles. Meeting hosts cannot accept or reject participants from their vehicles, and new meetings cannot be created through the car interface. Camera functionality remains disabled throughout calls, ensuring drivers maintain visual attention on traffic conditions.

Google's decision to prioritize Apple's platform over its own Android Auto has drawn attention from technology observers. The company stated that Android Auto support is coming "soon" but provided no specific timeline for the release.
