French teachers Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris landed at Charles de Gaulle airport Wednesday morning, ending nearly four years of detention in Iran on espionage charges that France consistently rejected as fabricated.
The couple arrived shortly before 9am via Azerbaijan under diplomatic escort, met on the tarmac by foreign ministry crisis teams. They were scheduled to meet President Emmanuel Macron later in the day.
This is a relief for all of us and obviously for their families

Kohler, 41, and Paris, 72, were arrested on May 7, 2022, during the final day of a tourist trip to Iran. Iranian authorities later sentenced them to 20 and 17 years respectively in October 2025 for allegedly spying for France and Israel — charges both teachers and the French government vehemently denied.
The pair spent over three years in Tehran's notorious Evin prison before being released to house arrest at the French embassy in November. They remained confined there for five additional months while diplomatic negotiations continued.
Frames the detention as an 'ordeal' and emphasizes diplomatic success in securing release. Highlights Macron's personal involvement and portrays Iran's charges as baseless, reinforcing French narrative of hostage diplomacy while celebrating diplomatic victory.
