The tariff announcement formed part of a broader agreement between Washington and Tehran that includes nuclear material removal and uranium enrichment restrictions. Trump stated the US would work closely with Iran to excavate and eliminate nuclear remnants from American airstrikes conducted last year during what became known as the Twelve Days War.
The ceasefire agreement emerged from intensive diplomatic negotiations involving Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir, who helped broker the deal before a US ultimatum deadline expired. Israel also agreed to suspend its bombardment operations as part of the temporary cessation of hostilities.
Trump's nuclear claims reference US attacks on three Iranian facilities — Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan — using B-2 stealth bombers in June 2023. Those strikes targeted Iran's uranium enrichment program, which Tehran claimed was operating at 60% enrichment levels for peaceful purposes, though this approached the 90% threshold needed for weapons-grade material.
