A 20-year-old Texas man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after throwing a Molotov cocktail at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's San Francisco home early Friday morning. Daniel Moreno-Gama traveled from Spring, Texas, to carry out what authorities describe as a planned attack motivated by opposition to artificial intelligence.

Security cameras captured Moreno-Gama hurling the incendiary device at Altman's residence around 4:00 AM, igniting an exterior gate before fleeing on foot. Less than an hour later, he appeared at OpenAI's headquarters three miles away, where he struck glass doors with a chair and threatened to burn down the building.

This was not spontaneous. This was planned, targeted and extremely serious

Matt Cobo, FBI San Francisco Acting Special Agent in Charge

When arrested, Moreno-Gama carried documents detailing his anti-AI views, including a section titled "Some more words on the matter of our impending extinction." The writings discussed artificial intelligence's purported risks to humanity and contained names and addresses of various AI company executives and investors.

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Moreno-Gama faces state charges including two counts of attempted murder for targeting both Altman and a security guard at the residence. The charges carry penalties ranging from 19 years to life in prison. Federal prosecutors have separately charged him with possession of an unregistered firearm and attempted property destruction using explosives.

We interpret this behaviour for just what it is: An attempt on Mr Altman's life and an extreme danger to those around him and those who work for his company

Brooke Jenkins, San Francisco District Attorney

FBI agents recovered incendiary devices, kerosene, and a lighter from the suspect. The recovered documents allegedly stated that Moreno-Gama "must lead by example and show that I am fully sincere in my message" regarding his advocacy for violence against AI executives.

The attack highlights growing tensions surrounding artificial intelligence development. Altman, whose company's ChatGPT launch in 2022 accelerated mainstream AI adoption, has become a prominent figure in debates over the technology's risks and benefits. No injuries occurred in either incident.

On Monday, FBI agents searched Moreno-Gama's family home in Spring, Texas, spending several hours at the property. Neighbors described the homeowners as church-going people who were well-regarded in the community.

Violence cannot be the norm for expressing disagreement, be it with politics or a technology or any other matter

Todd Blanche, Acting Attorney General

OpenAI responded by emphasizing the importance of democratic processes in AI governance while condemning violence. The company confirmed that both Altman's home and their headquarters were targeted in the attacks.

Moreno-Gama is scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday afternoon. He has not yet entered a plea, and court records do not show legal representation. The case raises questions about how AI safety concerns might manifest in extremist actions as the technology continues its rapid advancement.
